VILLA KAMOGAWA x COMMUNITY MUSIC
Space for all
We don't share a language. We share songs and space.
The Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa stands in Yoshida, in Kyoto's Sakyō ward. Its team wants the Villa to become a "third cultural space" for the people around it. Community Music is one way to get there.
In February 2026, Community Musicians Matt Robinson and Marleen Kiesel of Paper Lantern Collective spent a week in and around Kyoto, meeting teachers, artists and local organisers and visiting kindergartens. In November they come back for two weeks to make music with the people they met, together with Studio Musica. Culminating in a German Christmas market with a full Community Music programme in the Villa’s Great Hall, open to everyone: singing and playing for families with small children, a songwriting workshop for families with children from six, and a singalong of German Christmas carols.
