1. What would you like to celebrate after one month of work in Chemnitz?
Matt - We’ve done a massive amount of work and are now, it feels, as deeply connected into the city and the place as it is possible to be after just being here one short month. It’s been very challenging negotiating the complexity of the place at times, but it’s also been a joy to meet so many open and welcoming people and to have each day with some kind of lovely and successful meeting. Have never felt more welcome in a place.
Marleen - Unsere Engagementarbeit ist super wichtig, und ich finde wir sind auf einem sehr guten Weg, sind für die kurze Zeit schon gut vernetzt - aber: für mich als Community Musician braucht es Workshops. Das sind die Momente, in denen wir uns unserem Netzwerk auf andere Weise zu zeigen, als "nur" da zu sein und nett zu quatschen. So langsam steigt der Druck, dass Menschen sehen, was wir eigentlich machen! Mit den regelmäßigen Angeboten dauert es wohl noch ein paar Wochen, aber unseren ersten Workshop hatten wir dieses Wochenende im IZDA - einem soziopolitischen Zentrum bei einem Sprachcafé! Es war sehr entspannt, mit super netten Menschen - wir freuen uns auf mehr!
2. What was the most surprising or unexpected outcome of your efforts?
Matt - Yesterday we hosted a little get together just for our direct neighbours. Handmade letters through the door in two languages with an invitation to coffee and cake. No expectation that anyone would actually turn up. But they did! And lots! And it was super super lovely with a glorious group of people. A very nice little corner of the world we have found.
Marleen - Unser kleines Nachbarschaftstreffen in unserem Haus war natürlich super schön! Noch überraschender als die Gäste selbst war eine Nachbarin, die nicht kommen konnte uns allerdings eine Pflanze am Abend zuvor vorbei gebracht hat. Oder die Nachbarin, die ein Päckchen abgeholt hat und sich entschuldigt hat, dass sie keine Zeit hatte! Oder die Nachbarin, die uns Küchenutensilien ihrer Kinder weitergegeben hat! Es sind die kleinen "An-der-Tür"-Gespräch, die so kurz sie sein mögen, einfach ein gutes Nachbarschaftsgefühl hinterlassen!
3. How can you take what you’ve learned last month to grow personally or professionally?
Matt - There is so much to learning from the last month. Establishing both Paper Lantern and the Community Music Chemnitz project is probably the most difficult and challenging thing that I have done in my career - a whole new level that I’m feeling I’m growing into. It’s fast paced, really extensive, stressful, joyous, extremley multi-faceited and complex. It feels like learning to swim all over again - but with the glorious Mareike and Marleen along for the ride!
Marleen - Für mich fühlt es sich noch zu früh an, um zu sagen, ich sei in den letzten Wochen gewachsen. Es ist alles erst der Start, und bis jetzt lagen noch keine riesigen Steine im Weg. Mit guten Gesprächen, einem ehrlichem Gefühl zu sich selbst, offenen Augen wird noch ganz viel passieren!
