Who it’s for

Participants seeking extended study and a more formalised qualification route.

What you will learn

Fundamentals of community music. Among other things, the following questions will be addressed:

  • How do I implement the ideal of cultural democracy in my practice?

  • How can I facilitate and guide inclusive music-making processes?

  • How can I create a safe and discrimination-critical space in a community music workshop?

  • What does facilitation mean?

  • What knowledge and skills are helpful for trauma-sensitive practice?

  • What does community music mean as an artistic practice?

  • How do I plan projects and how do I argue for my projects?

The course also delves into the history of community music, international perspectives on the practice, its place in the German context, the underlying broad concept of music, a critical understanding of the principles of cultural democracy as the ability and right of every human being to express themselves creatively and help shape culture, inclusion and hospitality. After an introduction to practical and theoretical basics, participants will carry out their own community music project with the support of a mentor from the Konzerthaus Dortmund, including a training day at the Konzerthaus Dortmund. National networking through access to the Community Music Network and international networking (with the International Centre for Community Music, among others) will be supported as part of the course.
